Installing MPrint Printers (Windows)

Summary

Directions on how to install MPrint printers via either the MPrint Discovery Tool, or mprint.umich.edu on a Windows machine.

Environment

  • Windows 10 and 11

Installing Printers with the MPrint Discovery Tool (LSA-Managed Windows 10/11)

Accessing the MPrint Discovery Tool

There are two primary ways to access the MPrint Discovery Tool application

Start Menu

  1. Click on the Start Menu
  2. Locate and click on 'MPrint Discovery Tool'
    • You can search by typing 'MPrint Discovery Tool' into the search bar within the Start Menu and selecting it from the search results.
    • It will also be listed under the full application listing, found by clicking 'All Apps'

'Block M App' (WLMS Notify)

  1. Click on the 'Block M App' (WLMS Notify)
    • WLMS Notify is accessed from the system tray, found in the Windows taskbar, usually by the system clock
    • The system tray can hide lesser-used icons, so you may need to click the upward-facing arrow to expand these hidden icons to find it
  2. Select 'MPrint Printer Installer'

Manual Launch

The MPrint Discovery Tool can also be launched directly via C:\Program Files\MPrint\MPrint_Installer.exe

Unmanaged Devices

Users with unmanaged devices can go to the following link to download the MPrint Installer: https://mprint.umich.edu/install

Using the MPrint Discovery Tool

Authenticating

The MPrint Discovery App does an authentication step to determine which printers are available to the user launching the app.  If it finds a valid account association with MPrint, it will confirm this result with the user.

For Accounts with No Access to MPrint Resources

Note that non-uniqname accounts (service, local, or similar accounts) may not have any access to MPrint resources.  If this is the case, the Discovery App will endlessly sit on the 'Authenticating' step.   If this is the case, you can directly specify credentials to use by doing the following:

  1. Manually navigating to the executable for the app at C:\Program Files\MPrint\mprint_installer.exe
  2. Shift-Right-Click on the app and select 'Run as different user'
  3. Input valid domain credentials that have access to MPrint Resources

Installing

Once authenticated, you will be presented with available printers to install.

  1. Locate the printer(s) you wish to install
    • This is usually easiest by searching by typing in part or all of the device's name in the provided search bar.
    • If you are uncertain what printers are nearby, you can click 'Find Printers on Map' to open MPrint Maps.
    • Printers should have their names printed on a sticker affixed to the device
  2. Select Devices
    • You can multi-select printers by clicking on multiple lines
    • You can search, select target device(s), and then search for a different term and it will remember selected devices.
  3. Consider adding the "Follow Me" queue (search for it; there are several of these, any will work)
  4. Optionally select the 'add queue for all users' to install the queues for all users.
  5. Click 'Install Printers'
  6. A progress bar will show installation status and when complete a window will confirm the install
    • When done, the selected printer should display a check mark in the 'Installed' column
